Trish Phillips.

Is a ceramic maker who works primarily with thrown porcelain which she manipulates, while still soft, using the whole or parts of her own body, to press, tilt and rebalance the symetrical thrown shape.

Her distinctive pieces, defined by the play of light and shadow over them, are minimally decorated with a silky white Dolomite glaze that enhances the quiet complexity of each form. Often arranged in pairs or groups, her vessels explore not just their own presence but also the spaces between them which take on meaning of their own. Though sculptural in quality she sees her pieces as functional, intended as containers to be used and lived with.

She Studied ceramics at Harrow Art College under influential tutors including Wally Keeler, Mick Casson, Colin Pearson and David Leach. She later established, with a fellow potter, a workshop in Devon winning support from a Crafts Council grant, producing salt glazed stoneware and porcelain alongside teaching part time in Art Colleges in Somerset and East London.

After completing an MA in Art in Architecture and a period working in cast Glass and other materials, she has returned to clay, now creating a deeply personal body of work in porcelain from her studio in Devon.
